Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)

Who is a candidate for breast reduction plastic surgery?

In general, a candidate for breast reduction is any patient who feels they have overly large breasts that may be causing physical and emotional discomfort.

What is reduction mammaplasty?

Reduction mammaplasty, or breast reduction, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin, creating better proportion to the rest of your body.

Where is the breast reduction plastic surgery performed?

Cosmetic breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis in a surgical center.

How is breast reduction surgery performed?

Breast reduction surgery is performed by removing the excess breast tissue, fat and skin, and shifting the nipple and areola to a higher position, to improve drooping.

Will my breast reduction scars be permanent?

Scars are permanent, but will fade with time.

What will my recovery be like following breast reduction surgery?

Dressings will be changed and drains removed after the first week. You will begin to move about more comfortably after about two weeks. After several weeks your bruising and swelling will diminish and sensation within the nipple and areola area will gradually improve. You may return to most of your normal activities after four to six weeks. After a few months, your breasts will settle into a more natural shape and incisions will begin to fade.

What can I do to prepare for my breast reduction surgery?

Your plastic surgeon will instruct you on what medications to avoid prior to your surgery. Smoking must be stopped for a period of time before and after surgery. Make arrangements ahead of time for assistance at home after your breast reduction.
